Remote work security is one of the top IT challenges for Houston businesses in 2025. Employees working from home, coffee shops, and client sites create security risks that a traditional office IT setup was not designed to handle. This guide covers the essential controls for securing your remote Houston workforce.
The Remote Work Attack Surface
Every remote worker is a potential entry point into your business. The remote work attack surface includes: home network routers (often unpatched with default credentials), personal devices accessing corporate resources, public WiFi at coffee shops and airports, phishing emails targeting remote workers who lack the social context of an office, and the employee themselves — less likely to notice security anomalies when working alone.
Control 1: Multi-Factor Authentication
MFA is the most important remote work security control. With MFA, a stolen password alone cannot enable account takeover. Require MFA for Microsoft 365, VPN, and all remote access systems. Use Microsoft Authenticator with number matching enabled. For executives and high-privilege accounts, use FIDO2 hardware keys.
Control 2: Managed Devices and MDM
Require all employees to use company-managed devices enrolled in Intune MDM. Block personal (unmanaged) device access to corporate resources through Conditional Access policies. Managed devices have: encryption enabled, required security patches, EDR installed, and remote wipe capability if lost. Unmanaged personal devices have none of these.
Control 3: Zero Trust Remote Access
Replace traditional VPN with zero trust network access (ZTNA) that grants per-application access rather than full network access. If a remote worker’s device is compromised, ZTNA limits the attacker to the specific applications the employee was authorized to access — not the entire corporate network.
